Day 14

This is the day before the final. It is review day. We were supposed to go over Word and PowerPoint, but everyone is comfortable with them so we went back over Access. This is very helpful to help us get the concept of Access. This is officially the last for our blogs, everything is due today. I totally under estimated this class. Dr. Jackson really made us learn....at first I was disappointed because I thought that I was going to breeze thru this course. But Dr. Jackson is a professional and he is passionate about African Americans learning not just memorizing the information. He wants us to be successful. I really enjoyed his class (after we got passed Access). I recommend him highly to any student who really wants to learn and be encouraged to be more than they can be. Dr. Jackson is encouraging us all to be MIS majors and get a doctorate degree. I must say i have been thinking about it.

Day 8

I missed the entry for day 8 because this was the day of the Access Mid-term...the test was so hard and long...it took me the entire class period to do it and i forgot to do a blog entry. That was a very frustrating day.

Day 13

Today we are going over Access for the final exam. We spent a great part of the class going over how to link tables and making sure it is linked by the primary key. Dr. Jackson used an example of an employee clock in and out system. He did a conceptual design with 3 tables, one being Faculty, Time and Lunch Table. I believe I have grasped it! I cant imagine what the test is going to be like, he said the concept of the final is going to center around the NBA Finals (Lets Go Lakers!!!!!!). We are going to have to do an Excel spreadsheet, an Access Database, and create a PowerPoint presentation and Word document. He is really waking up the brain. I think Access and linking the primary keys is going to be the last part i do. I am going to finish the easy stuff first. Primary Keys ugghhhhh!!!!!!

Day 12

Today we are reviewing for the final exam. It's time to study and practice what we have learned so far. With this being a 4 week class we had to learn quick and retain as much as possible. Today we went over Excel, he used an example of when he started his business..he used excel to show us a started money worksheet. He went over adding, dividing and multiplying cells (cell reference, custom formulas). Excel is not as confusing today...tomorrow we will be going over Access, oh my gosh! Studying is hard, but we should always want more knowledge.

Day 11

Today Dr. Jackson was informing us on how to purchase a computer. He informed us that most people when they go buy computers, they are interested in how many gigabits they get, how much memory they get. He said that is not what you should be looking for. He informed us that the space is not in the memory but on your hard drive. He also said dont listen to your friends who are technicians for Charter, Ameren, Laclede Gas, etc. He said they may just be a technician working in a certain department, they dont actually work on computers. He said dont worry about processor speed. He said dont worry about memory, because you are going to have more than enough memory no matter what it size you buy. He also said that cheap computers are just as good as the expensive ones. Most people on use them for internet, social networking or word processing, so why pay a lot of money for a computer. The cheap ones do exactly what the pricy one do.

Day 10

Today we continued on to finish up PowerPoint. Dr. Jackson talked to the class about getting a Doctorate Degree. He has sparked my interest, he thinks no one is listening but we are. My sister is working towards her Doctorate in Managment. She attends the University of Phoenix. She says it is very hard and she has considered quitting from the stress, but her husband and our family has been a big support system for her. She is standing strong. I may follow in her footsteps one day. I think.

Day 9

Today Dr. Jackson introduced powerpoint by showing the class his dissersation on that he did as a powerpoint presentation. Later we worked on powerpoint chap 1. Everyone in the class has done a powepoint presentation so everyone was famliar with. We basically did our own thing today. Today was a good day!

Day 7

Today we just played catch up on all of our labs, and cases and places in Access. We also went over lab 3 in chapter 2 because Dr. Jackson saw that there was some confusion on linking tables. He told us that chap 3 was just reinterating what we had been doing unknowingly in the previous chapter 1 & 2.

Day 6

Today in Access we learned about creating queryies. Queries are simply questions, the answers to which are in the database. Access are just databases created for departmental use. I did not know it at the time, but on my previous job i was using Access in the program SAP i used to enter payroll, and order supplies. We also learned to add fields to the design grid, use numbers in the criterion, to use comparision and compound criteria. I thought i was going to like Access, but...NOT! i am not very happy right now.

Day 5

Today we started Access chapter 1. We discussed that Access is a database. It is used to create, add, change, delete, sort, retrieve, create forms and reports. Inside the database which the repository, it is made up of a table with columns and rows. The table has to have unique design. It has to have atleast one primary key (it must be unique, only identifible by one person. Can link the tables together by the primary key. The record is the data put into the table(rows) are left to right and the columns (field) are vertical. The in class assignment was pretty cool. Access is interesting and fun so far. We will see what tomorrow will bring.

Day 4

Today we went into detail on Excel chap. 3. Went deeper into what-if analysis, charting and workin with large worksheets. Dr. Jackson gave us a quiz on Excel asking us to calculate a 30 year mortgage monthly payment. Everyone was struggling with it, so he gave us until Saturday to finish. Im so confused and frustrated..MY BRAIN HURTS!!!!! but i refuse to give up...i will figure it out somehow...i hope.

Day 3

Today we worked on Excel Chapter 3 Lab 2 in class. The dealt with what-if-analysis, charting and working with large worksheets. This is a little bit more difficult than the previous chapters. Im having a problem with an assignment called Britney's Music Emporium Weekly Payroll Report. Im stuck on the what-if-analysis and I am not happy.

Day 2

Today, we worked on Excel Chapter 2. In Chap 2, we discussed the custom formula. We learned that when using the custom formula you must first select the cell and enter the equal sign, cell reference, use the order of operations and fill handle. We also discussed how to stack words, and how to use the average, max and min functions.

Day 1

I missed the 1st day of summer school @ hssu. I dont have any notes to enter, and the instructor Dr. Jackson wont excuse my absence (with a Dr.s statement). Im not happy.
